Sublets

5 Tips for Doing a Sublet Right

Written in collaboration with the Student Legal Services Office, last revised 04/11/18.

1. Check Your Lease

Check your lease before you make any plans. Does it allow you to sublet?

2. Talk to the Landlord

If your lease permits you to sublet, have a conversation about expectations. Even if your lease says you can’t sublet, talk to your landlord anyway to see if there are options.

3. Rent payments

Decide how rent will be paid. Will your sub-tenant pay the landlord directly or will they pay you? Tell the landlord if your sub-tenant will be paying them directly.

4. Get it in Writing

Sign a sublease agreement with your sub-tenant. There’s an agreement on the UMass Off Campus Housing website.

5. FREE Legal Advice

If you are a UMass Amherst student and want guidance about subletting or any other legal matter, complete the Student Legal Services Office intake form.
